Capricornia Catchments worked with Coowonga State School, with support from the Australian Government’s Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program, to establish a lasting native food tree planting at the school.
The project saw 50 native food trees planted, supported by a new irrigation system and individual identification plaques sharing each plant’s scientific name, common names and uses. Students were involved throughout the project, helping with site preparation, planting, tree guards, watering and ongoing care.
A commemorative event was held on 12 October 2023, including a Welcome to Country by Wade Mann, student presentations and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. The project provides an ongoing opportunity for students to learn about native plants while creating habitat and food resources for local wildlife.
A wonderful example of young people getting involved in caring for their local environment.
